Italian Amaretti

Italian Amaretti are my favourite side dish to a good coffee or espresso. As today is German Unity Day, a quite important holiday in this country, coffee and cake with the family (another typical German tradition) is on the agenda. Now I am not a big fan of store bought cakes or even biscuits as they always contain something they shouldn’t I decided to make some good old Amaretti, the Italian answer to Macarons. They are quick and easy to make, have only 4 ingredients and taste delicious!

Ingredients
  • 450 g powdered sugar
  • 450 g ground almonds
  • 4 egg whites
  • 30 ml amaretto (or 1 tsp almond extract)
Servings: Amaretti
Instructions
  1. Sift powdered sugar and ground almonds into a large bowl (It will get the lumps out of the sugar, and leftover almond skins out of the almond flour)
  2. Add egg whites and flavouring of your choice (bitter almond or amaretto) and mix everything for a few minutes
  3. With wet hands roll the dough into hazelnut sized balls and place on baking sheet, and slighty press every ball down a bit with your finger
  4. Bake for 20 minutes at 150 C
