The other day my mom gave me a large piece of lovely dark grey felt which she planned to turn into a purse but never got around to it. Instead of throwing it out, I decided to find something to make. Anything which involved sewing wasn’t an option as I have very little experience with it and this felt is quite thick and difficult to bend.
Finally after (once again) searching Pinterest for inspiration, I got the idea to simply make some coasters out of it. Instead of choosing round ones I went with a hexagon shape which enables me to combine all the coasters to a large mat, holding anything bigger than cups. You can download and print the template I created below. You can choose between 10cm and 12cm, which is what I used.
1. Get some tailors chalk (the pointier, the better), some strong scissors and of course a template. Start drawing the shapes onto the firmer side of the felt as this will make it easier to cut.
2. Whichever way you decide to cut the felt, stick to it! If you cut right through the lines or completely cut the lines off, do the same for every side of the hexagon, otherwise it will be uneven and they won’t match.
3. Finally, test if they match and correct where necessary. All done. Enjoy your new coasters!
